The Benefits of a Group Lesson

Shawnee Mountain is a beginner-friendly mountain known for teaching generations of snowsports lovers how to ski and ride. Founded by winter Olympian Jean Claude Killy, our Snowsports School is renowned for our lessons and our instructors’ abilities to instill the love of winter into our guests.

Our group lessons are one hour long and consist of one instructor and a group of students, usually up to 8 people. The lessons offered through our Snowsports School are for ages 6 and up for ski, and 7 and up for snowboard. Many adults who are interested in learning are worried that they’ll be taught alongside a group of children but that’s not typically the case! People of all ages take our lessons and when we can, we group adults and children with separate instructors. We do this because children tend to learn differently than adults do, and we want every lesson-taker to have the best experience possible.

Everyone in the group will be taught together and will take turns practicing the skills taught by the instructor. We offer these lessons for both skiing and snowboarding. If you purchase your lessons as part of a package, your lift ticket and equipment rentals are good for the whole day and you are welcome to practice on the beginner hill or venture out onto the mountain if you feel comfortable.

First Time Lesson – This lesson is for our “never-ever” skiers and riders; that means our guests who have never tried the sport before. It is also great for someone who hasn’t been out in a long time and needs to start from the beginning. This lesson will teach the basics starting with putting on your equipment, and will move at the group members’ paces to work through skills like how to stop.

Beginner Lesson – Following the natural progression of learning how to ski and ride, this group lesson builds upon the basics taught in the First Time Lesson. You will learn skills such as controlling your speed and changing directions. This lesson is great for continuing your education in a beginner-friendly environment.
