The snowsports industry has been enriched by the contributions of numerous individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion. In honor of Black History Month, we highlight some of the key figures and groups making significant impacts:

BIPOC leaders who are shaping the industry

Zeb Powell

In 2020, Zeb Powell made history as the first Black snowboarder to win a gold medal at the Winter X Games. Beyond his competitive achievements, Powell is dedicated to introducing inner-city youth to snowboarding, aiming to diversify the sport and inspire the next generation.

Latrice Pringle

Latrice Pringle made history as the first African American to compete in a Winter X Games Special Olympics Unified Snowboarding competition in January 2020. Her participation highlights the increasing diversity and inclusion within competitive snowboarding.

Andre & Suki Horton

Hailing from Anchorage, Alaska, siblings Andre and Suki Horton have been prominent figures in competitive skiing. Andre became the first Black man on the U.S. Ski Team in 2001, and both have been involved with the NBS, inspiring future generations of Black skiers.

Bonnie St. John

Despite having her right leg amputated at age 5, Bonnie St. John became the first African American to win medals in Winter Olympic competition, earning a silver and two bronze medals in alpine skiing at the 1984 Paralympics. She continues to inspire as a speaker and author.

Ava Keenan

At just 12 years old, Ava Keenan is part of a new wave of Black athletes aiming to diversify skiing. She trains with the National Brotherhood of Skiers and aspires to compete at the highest levels, breaking barriers for future generations.

Organizations supporting BIPOC snowsports participants

National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS)

Founded in 1973, the NBS is a nonprofit organization with the mission to “identify, develop, and support athletes of color who will WIN Olympic and international winter sports competitions, representing the United States in national and international competitions, and increase participation in winter sports.” The NBS comprises over 50 clubs nationwide and has been instrumental in fostering a sense of community among Black skiers and snowboarders.

Black Ski Inc.

Established in 1972 in Washington, D.C., Black Ski Inc. is a nonprofit ski club and one of the founding members of the NBS. The organization welcomes members regardless of race, color, age, gender, or religion, promoting inclusivity within the skiing community.

Black Girls Ski and Snowboard (BGS&S)

Affiliated with the NBS, BGS&S is dedicated to encouraging women and girls of color to participate in skiing and snowboarding. Beyond winter sports, they engage in activities like golf, biking, and swimming during the offseason, fostering a year-round active community.

EDGE Outdoors

This organization empowers Black, Indigenous, and Women of Color (BIWOC) in snow sports by offering scholarships for learn-to-ski and snowboard programs, avalanche education, and professional instructor certifications. EDGE Outdoors aims to increase diversity and representation within the industry.

BIPOC Mountain Collective

Operating in the U.S. and Canada, this network comprises individuals from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities who share a passion for snow sports and outdoor adventures. The collective strives to create inclusive spaces and opportunities for BIPOC enthusiasts.

UNLIKELY RIDERS

This group focuses on increasing diversity in snowboarding by providing access, mentorship, and education to underrepresented communities. They aim to break down barriers and make snowboarding more accessible to all.
