Brief History of the Mountain

Shawnee Mountain Ski Area, located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1975. Over the years, it has grown to become a popular destination for skiing and snowboarding, focusing on providing a family-friendly experience.

1. Founding and Early Years (1975-1980s): Shawnee Mountain Ski Area was established in 1975. In its early years, it focused on offering a small variety of slopes catering to all skill levels. For the first couple of seasons the ski area was “upside down” meaning the lodge and rental area was all at the top of the mountain.

2. Expansion and Development (1990s-2000s): Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Shawnee Mountain expanded its facilities, adding more trails, lifts, and snowmaking capabilities. During this period, the ski area also introduced snow tubing and began hosting various events and competitions.

3. Recent Developments (2010s-Present): Shawnee Mountain has continued to improve its infrastructure and snowmaking technology to enhance the guest experience. In addition to its winter sports offerings, the ski area now hosts a few seasonal events, including a fireworks festival and a food truck festival.

Despite these additions, Shawnee Mountain remains primarily focused on winter sports, maintaining its reputation as a beloved destination for skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts and continues to remain family-focused and family-owned.
