There is no better feeling than that first day back on the mountain. Fresh air hitting your face, fresh snow and that first ride of the season. Whether you’re a seasoned rider shaking off all the built up rust or a newcomer, gearing up for your first run and having the right stuff with you can make or break your day. To keep things simple here is a quick overview on what to pack before heading to Shawnee Mountain.

1. Your Base Layers
To start, let’s start with the essentials. Moisture-wicking base layers that keep you warm without feeling bulky. Avoid turning to cotton because once it’s wet it stays wet.
2. Insulated Mid Layers
A fleece or lightweight puffy jacket adds warmth without weighing you down. Conditions can change fast, so having something easy to layer is key. Its better to overpack then under pack.
3. Waterproof/Insulated Outerwear
A solid ski or snowboard jacket and pants that repel wind, water and trap then warmth to keep you comfortable all day. Make sure your jacket has pockets! Trust me, you’ll use them.
4. Gloves or Mittens
Cold hands = short day. Bring a warm, waterproof pair. If you tend to run cold, pack thin liners too. Also adding some hand warmers in your gloves work too.

5. Helmet & Goggles
Safety first! A helmet is non-negotiable. Goggles help with visibility on bright days, snowy days, or when were blowing snow so don’t leave them behind.
6. Socks (and an Extra Pair)
Wear ski/snowboard-specific socks for comfort and warmth. Throw an extra pair in your bag just in case. There’s nothing better than switching into dry socks midday. Feet warmers also help too.

7. Neck Warmer or Balaclava
A simple layer around your neck and face can make windy lift rides so much more enjoyable and can prevent windburn.
8. Snacks & Water
Pack some easy snacks for tailgating before hitting the slopes. Snacks like granola bars, trail mix, or a small sandwich. You’ll burn more energy than you think, and staying hydrated still matters, even in the cold.
9. Sunscreen & Lip Balm
Snow reflects sunlight, and a sunny day on the mountain can sneak up on you. A quick layer of sunscreen and SPF lip balm keeps the burn away.
10. A Small Backpack or Boot Bag
Perfect for holding socks, gloves, and any extras you don’t want in your pockets. It makes your first day back on the mountain way easier.

Now that you’re packed and ready, all that’s left to do is show up and enjoy it. Your day on the mountain doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be fun. Take it one run at a time, soak in the mountain views, and don’t forget to warm up with a break in the lodge. We can’t wait to welcome you to Shawnee Mountain!
